Opportunity Overview

Access Bank Malawi is seeking a talented and motivated Software Developer (Full-Stack) to join our Digital & Innovation team in Lilongwe. In this role you will design, build, and maintain customer-facing web applications and internal banking platforms that serve over 300,000 customers across Malawi.

You will work alongside a collaborative cross-functional team of product managers, UX designers, and infrastructure engineers to deliver high-quality software on time. We are proud of our agile culture and believe that every developer's voice matters in shaping the products we build.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and deploy scalable web applications using React.js (front-end) and Node.js / Express.js (back-end).
  • Build and maintain RESTful APIs that integrate with core banking systems, third-party payment gateways, and mobile money providers.
  • Collaborate with UX/UI designers to translate wireframes and prototypes into pixel-perfect, accessible interfaces.
  • Write comprehensive unit, integration, and end-to-end tests to maintain a high standard of code quality and reliability.
  • Participate actively in code reviews, sprint planning, and retrospectives as part of an agile team.
  • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, security vulnerabilities, and reliability issues in production systems.
  • Document technical specifications, API contracts, and architectural decisions to support knowledge sharing across the team.
  • Mentor junior developers and contribute to a positive, growth-oriented team culture.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and make recommendations for adoption where appropriate.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Relevant professional certifications (e.g. AWS, Google Cloud, MongoDB) are a strong advantage.

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of professional experience as a full-stack web developer in a production environment.
  • Proven track record of delivering end-to-end features from requirements through to deployment.
  • Experience working in agile / scrum teams with tools like Jira, Confluence, or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in financial services, fintech, or a highly regulated industry is an added advantage.

Technical Skills

JavaScript (ES6+) React.js Node.js Express.js PostgreSQL MongoDB REST APIs Git / GitHub Docker HTML5 / CSS3 Jest / Testing CI / CD Pipelines

Other Requirements

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • A commitment to writing clean, well-documented, and maintainable code.
  • Must be a Malawian citizen or have a valid work permit for Malawi.
  • Willingness to occasionally work outside of regular hours to support production deployments or incidents.
